HITTITE ERA POTTERY 1750 BC - 600 BC
BUILDERS AND ARTISTS OF ANATOLIA
The Hittites appeared in Anatolia from the northeast, at the start of the second millenium B.C By 1750 B.C., they controlled the main cities in the area. The Hittite capital was formed at Hattushash in the 1600s B.C.. They later conquered Babylon, Mesopotamia, and northern Syria. They were at their peak from about 1400 B.C., and unsuccessfully tried to conquer Egypt during the 1200s B As a result of the disruptions caused by the invasion of the Sea peoples the Hittite empire collapsed around 1200 B.C. leaving behind a number of Hitbte city states and the Urartian Kingdom as successors. This dominating and dynamic culture, during its heyday, built magnificent cities with fortresses, citadeis and sculptures and produced fantastic pottery, stamp seals, reliefs and scripts most of which are displayed in archeology and art museums as well as historic sites and ruins around modern day Turkey.
What was happening elsewhere? Hanging gardens of Babylon deciared itself as one of the seven wonders of the world. The new Kingdom served the golden era of Egypt, but was beaten by the Nubian Kushites after the death of Ramses XI. The Zhou Dynasty ruled China for 900 years. The Aryans and the two major world religions, Buddhism and Hinduism spread through India. Troy was raided by the Mycenaeans, Acropolis was bulit in Athens. The Greek alphabet developed while the City of Rome laid its foundations. Israel prospered under King David and the Olmec culture continued to offer sacrifices to their gods throughout Mesoamerica.
